FIELD NOTES / 01

How to play Farflung

Five clues. One world map. Find a country that fits, then see how far your knowledge takes you.

A clue can have many correct answers. You only need to choose one.

Your first expedition

  1. Choose your journey. Play today’s Daily for the shared challenge, or choose Unlimited for a fresh expedition. Choose Classic for a timer or Wander for an untimed game.
  2. Read the clue and its note. The note explains details such as which spelling, borders, tournament years, or territories count.
  3. Choose one country. Click or tap the map. You can zoom in, or search for a country by name. Selecting a country does not submit it.
  4. Press Drop Pin. This locks in your answer. You get one submitted answer per round.
  5. Read the field notes. See your distance, explore the correct countries, and open the full answer list before continuing.

How distance works

A correct answer earns distance according to the country’s fixed familiarity tier. The same country has the same tier across prompts. These are editorial ratings, not live statistics about other players’ guesses.

Distance for a correct pin
TierDistance
Common40 km
Uncommon55 km
Rare70 km
Elusive85 km
Farflung100 km

A wrong answer, skipped round, or timeout earns zero. Five rounds have a theoretical ceiling of 500 km, but not every clue has an answer in the highest tier.

The clock and your pin

Classic gives you 60 seconds for each round. The timer keeps running when you open the menu, switch tabs, or leave the game. A country must be submitted before time runs out; simply selecting it is not enough.

Wander removes the timer. You can change your selected country as often as you like before submitting. After submission, your answer is final. Choose Leave this one blank if you want to skip.

Which countries count?

The game offers 195 selectable countries: the 193 United Nations member states, Palestine, and Vatican City. The map has no country-name labels. Country search helps you reach small islands and microstates.

Common English names and regional groupings follow the game’s atlas. Question notes explain exceptions. For example, a sports clue may tell you to pin the United Kingdom for England. Do not assume territories or historic teams are separate map answers.

Finish, share, and play again

After five rounds, you get a result showing your total distance and each answer. Copy Field Notes creates a compact result without revealing the answers. Daily shares include the challenge date; Unlimited shares use the infinity symbol.

Your completed Daily remains available as today’s result. Choose Play Unlimited for another game without replacing that Daily result.
